Harriet returned to the United States from Canada in 1861 . The Civil War started and begun enlisting all men and women (including colored) to be soldiers, cooks and nurses. She enlisted into the Union army as a "contraband" nurse at the hospital in Hilton Head , South Carolina for the first time. In the process of helping the wounded and sick soldiers, she miraculously never caught any of the deadly diseases that the soldiers carried.
Combahee River Raid
During the summer of 1863, she worked with Colonel James Montgomery as a scout . Harriet started to help Colonel James Montgomery to plan the Combahee River Raid . The purpose of the raid was to rescue more free slaves. They were successful with the raid and managed to gather 500 slaves . Most of the slaves that were rescued joined the army .
Meeting Nelson Davis
While Harriet was guiding a group of colored soldiers in South Carolina , she met Nelson Davis who was 10 years younger than her . After that ,She was denied of payment for wartime service and was forced to ride a baggage car back to Auburn as she got into a bruising fight.
